Junior EAC member
To encourage McCandless youth to become involved in local government and environmental programs, the Town of McCandless Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) has instituted a “Student EAC Member Program.” This program helps students better understand local government and how it works by actually participating in discussions at EAC meetings. A Student EAC member adds a student perspective to the decision making process of their local government regarding environmental issues in the Town.
Candidates will be sought through various methods including a posting of the position seeking interested candidates and advertising for interested candidates through the Town website and social media sources. Candidates shall submit an “Application for Appointment” form available by clicking here along with an essay of up to 300 words on why they want to serve as a Student EAC member. The EAC will review each candidate’s qualifications, conduct interviews, and make selections based on candidate qualifications.
The following are the requirements for the Student EAC member position:
- Town of McCandless resident
- Incoming high school juniors or seniors
- Serve a term coinciding largely with the school year (September/October through June)
- Attend EAC meetings (the second Wednesday of each month from 7:30-9pm) either in-person or via Zoom
- Provide a monthly status update to the EAC
- The Student EAC member will not be permitted to vote.
The Student EAC member will participate in all forms of EAC business. They will be encouraged to participate in discussions, ask questions, and give opinions. They must observe all meeting rules. The Student EAC member will be encouraged to declare a project or an area of focus. The EAC will appoint a mentor or co-mentors to guide the Student EAC member. The Student EAC member update will appear as an item on the EAC meeting agenda. The Student EAC member will be encouraged to write one article for the Town Crier and one Environmental Tips for the McMail newsletter.
